  5.                        HOW TO PREPARE THE PLANT MEDIUM

  7.               The next thing you will think about is a medium in
  8.           which your plants can grow.  This may be a compost of your
  9.           own making, or soil.  Composting won't be described here,
  10.           but it is basically a process of decomposing vegetable
  11.           matter (such as peelings, tops, etc.) in such a manner as
  12.           to make a humus.  If you do use composted material, you
  13.           should also add washed sand for drainage.

  15.               Sterlilized soil can be used as a medium for
  16.           plants.  Here's an easy way to sterilize soil:  Put moist
  17.           (not wet) soil in a pan of appropriate size, and with it,
  18.           put a potato wrapped in aluminum foil, for baking.  Cover
  19.           the whole thing with aluminium foil, and bake in an oven
  20.           until the potato is done enough to eat.  The soil will then
  21.           be properly sterilized for the planters.
